These handguns would continue to see use in limited numbers throughout the 90s and into the early 2000s. The last major conflict these handguns saw use in was during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 with some reserve units deployed to the region. By this time however, the 1911 had been replaced in service by the M9 handgun manufactured by Beretta. It would see a rebuild in 1987 at the Anniston Army Depot where it likely received it's newly manufactured slide and barrel as well as new grips. This particular pistol is an example of that. Production would end in 1945, with a total number of approximately 877,750 pistols having been produced.īecause the 1911 had such a long service life, many of these handguns saw multiple rebuilds during their service life. After these management changes, their quality standards were exceptional. Management was changed and production would resume in May with new processes in place. Remington Rand suffered from quality control issues early on, and in February 1943, production was halted due to poor parts interchangeability and inspection processes at the factory. They would produce nearly all parts necessary to manufacture 1911A1 handguns besides stocks and barrels, relying on subcontracted components from Keyes Fibre and High Standard respectively. Beginning in 1942, Remington Rand would receive tooling and equipment to manufacture 1911A1 handguns. While often mistakenly associated with Remington Arms company, Remington Rand was a manufacturer of typewriters. This handgun was originally made by Remington Rand. During this time, they would be manufactured in large numbers by Colt, Ithaca Gun Company, Union Switch and Signal, Singer and Remington Rand.
1911A1 handguns would be produced throughout WWII ending in 1945. Notable changes included a relief cut next to the trigger to allow for more comfortable firing of the pistol, an arched mainspring housing to provide a more natural grip, an extended grip safety spur to prevent hammer bite, a shorter trigger, and a widened front sight post, and a few other minor changes.
